RENTING REALITIES?

what is

Renting Realities in Mumbai is a research project conducted by Plural

Rental housing is a cornerstone of adequate housing and a fundamental safeguard of the right to life. Often sidelined in the advocacy of home ownership, rental housing provides flexibility and mobility to various demographics across all income brackets in urban India. With an objective of facilitating permanent forms of rental supply both in institutional and retail forms across all income brackets and at the same time acknowledging and supporting the informal supply that has provided this housing type, this research project analyses the current bottlenecks in policy, finance and real estate. Aimed at addressing existing and emerging urban centres in India, the research first addresses Mumbai’s challenging real estate landscape to find financially sustainable solutions for the rental housing sector. The solutions are presented at local, state and national level which would facilitate adoption and contextualisation by various other urban centers through the country.

The project is informed by in-depth discussions with experts from diverse backgrounds such as real estate, legislation and finance. These stakeholders are being engaged through focused brainstorming sessions, roundtable discussions and a public conference. Finally, an actionable agenda, presented to the government and the industry at large, elaborates on the recommended solutions. The research that identifies the gaps and outcomes of these discussions is made available on this website.
